چکیده

In the present study we investigated the effect of semantic context on the perception of words that differ only in the lexical stress pattern. Our study was based on the disyllabic German word AUGUST. Depending on whether the lexical stress is on the first or the second syllable the word refers to either a name or a month. By means of a forced-choice identification experiment we tested to what extent the lexical stressposition is triggered by the semantic context and by local phonetic cues. The stimuli that constituted a 7-step continuum from ‘August to Au’gust were appended to different word lists containing another name and another month, i.e. context words that were semantically related to either the name ‘August or the month Au’gust. Results showed that the perceptual boundary between ‘August and Au’gust was shifted according to the semantics of the adjacent context word. This semantic-context effect was present for both ambiguous and clear phonetic prominence cues in AUGUST.

Disentangling lexical, morphological, syntactic and semantic influences on German prominence - Evidence from a production study

The aim of this paper is to examine effects on syllable prominence exerted by word and phrase boundaries, lexical stress, and sentence focus, and by the interactions between these factors. In a production study, German verb prefixes potentially forming prosodic minimal word pairs were systematically placed in a set of different contexts. Acoustic analyses showed a consistent effect of lexical s...

Automatic prominence annotation of a German speech synthesis corpus: towards prominence-based prosody generation for unit selection synthesis

This paper describes work directed towards the development of a syllable prominence-based prosody generation functionality for a German unit selection speech synthesis system. A general concept for syllable prominence-based prosody generation in unit selection synthesis is proposed. As a first step towards its implementation, an automated syllable prominence annotation procedure based on acoust...

Interactions between Lexical and Phrasal Prosody in School-aged Children's Speech

This study investigated how children deploy cues to prominence in a speech task designed to encourage lexical stress shift. The duration, amplitude and F0 of the rhymes in stress-shiftable words were compared in stress clash and non-clash contexts. In adults’ speech, lexical and phrasal prominence patterns reinforced each other and were not sensitive to context. In children’s speech, the promin...

The Acoustic Manifestation of Prominence in Stressless Languages

Languages frequently express focus by enhancing various acoustic attributes of an utterance, but it is widely accepted that the main enhancement appears on stressed syllables. In languages without lexical stress, the question arises as to how focus is acoustically manifested. We thus examine the acoustic properties associated with prominence in three stressless languages, Indonesian, Korean and...

Phonetic detail in German syllable pronunciation: influences of prosody and grammar

This study presents two experiments designed to disentangle various influences on syllable pronunciation. Target syllables were embedded in carrier sentences, read aloud by native German participants, and analyzed in terms of syllable and vowel duration, acoustic prominence, and spectral similarity. Both experiments revealed a complex interaction of different factors, as participants attempted ...
